I tend to work on the same subject matter over the course of a
year or two. I work from photographs that I have taken. Once the
painting has begun, I no longer refer back to the picture. I change
the colors and the background because I am not trying to make
an exact replica of what I see, only a sense or feeling of what
was there. I work in oil paints on wood panels so I can manipulate
the paint and scratch into it without fear of harming my background.
In this way, I am not only painting on the wood, but also into
it.
