My painting process changed dramatically 2 years ago when I moved
into a loft with my own large studio. I still draw inspiration
from "the land" - earth forms, ocean, trees, plant life
- and now I love to dance around the studio and paint to jazz
music. Trained as a modern dancer, I taught creative movement
to children for many years. So my segue into painting includes
a love of chance elements and improvising. I have always sketched
and strive to keep a looseness in the finished picture. I've learned
the rules and the technique: what's next? I hope to avoid the
formula. I like to push the pastel medium, using a sanded paper
that accomodates a wet medium for an underpainting in watercolor.
I can leave a stroke of pure color, or blend and incise the pigment,
or rinse it off entirely for a new start. Sometimes in the rinsing
process the imprint reveals itself as a development worth keeping.
I like to stay open to exploration.
I love the directness and purity of the children's art in my classes.
I feel blessed to be able to teach and make art.
